Properties
Ciprocin (ciprofloxacin) is one of the most active fluoroquinolone antibacterial group. It acts as bactericidal by inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase and prevention of replication in susceptible bacteria.
Ciprocin is active against a wide range of gram-negative and gram positive organisms, including: Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin- susceptible and methicillin resistant strains). Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus viridans.
Pharmacokinetics
Following topical ophthalmic administration, systemic absorption of ciprofloxacin may occur. The maximum reported plasma concentration was less than 5 ng/ml for the ophthalmic solution and ointment.
Indications
Treatment of external ocular infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis or corneal ulcers.
Dosage and Administration
Bacterial conjunctivitis
Corneal ulcers
Ciprocin ophthalmic solution: 2 drops are instilled into the affected eye (s) every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours; then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, 2 drops are instilled in the affected eye (s) every hour. On the third day, 2 drops are instilled in the affected eye (s) every 4 hours and therapy may be continued for up to 14 days. Treatment may be continued if corneal re-epithelialization has not occurred.
Ciprocin ophthalmic preparations should be used only during one month after opening.
