Composition: Each 2 ml ampoule contains:
Elemental Iron …………. 100 mg (As Ferric Hydroxide Polymaltose complex)
Properties
Iron is an essential constituent of the body, necessary for haemoglobin formation and for the oxidative processes of living tissues. Iron deficiency results in defective erythropoiesis and anemia.
Indications
All cases of iron deficiency in which rapid and reliable substitution of iron is required more particularly for the following:
Dosage
Normal dose for adults =100 mg iron (1 ampoule) every second day. Children are given correspondingly less depending on their age.
Adverse reactions
Parenteral preparations commonly cause soreness and inflammation near the injection site, particularly after intramuscular administration. There may be sterile abscess formation and persistent skin discoloration.
Precautions
Administration of iron for longer than 6 months should be avoided except in patients with continued bleeding, menorrhagia, or repeated pregnancies.
Iron should not be used to treat hemolytic anemia unless an iron-deficient state also exists, since excess storage of iron with possible secondary hemochromatosis can result.
Iron should not be administered to patients receiving repeated blood transfusions, since there is considerable amount of iron in the hemoglobin of transfused erythrocytes.
Contraindications
Injectable iron should not be given to patients suffering from any of the following conditions: Hypersensitivity to iron, iron overload, chronic polyarthritis, bronchial asthma, renal or hepatic infections.
