Pharmacodynamics
Mupirax, mupirocin, is a topical antibacterial agent which inhibits bacterial protein synthesis & RNA synthesis by binding to isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase.
It is mainly active against aerobic isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (including Methicillin-resistant & B-Iactamase producing strains). S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus & Streptococcus pyogenes are susceptible to mupirocin.
It is also active against gram-negative organisms, such as Escherichia coli & Haemophilus influenzae. Mupirax shows no cross-resistance with other antibiotics.
Pharmacokintics
Mupirax has shown no measurable systemic absorption.
Its penetration into deeper epidermal & dermal layers of the skin is enhanced in traumatised skin & under occlusive dressings.
