ALLEREX 60 mg tablets: Uses, Dosage, FAQ –

ALLEREX, is an over-the-counter medication, belonging to a class of medicines called antihistamines. ALLEREX relieves allergy symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, and skin rashes.

ALLEREX tablets( 60 mg) used in adults and children aged 12 years or older to: 

  • Relief symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic rhinitis. 
  • Relief symptoms of urticaria .
  • ALLEREX is generally well tolerated. The most common adverse events are: headache, fatigue, dizziness or drowsiness and nausea. 

    ALLEREX recommended dosage for adults and children aged 12 years or older: 60 mg twice daily, when required.

    Quick Facts about ALLEREX tablets

  • For adults and children aged 12 years or older: ALLEREX tablets intended for use by adults and children over 12 years. For children younger than 12 years ALLEREX syrup is recommended.
  • Pregnancy: Do not take ALLEREX if you are pregnant, unless necessary.
  • Breastfeeding mothers: ALLEREX is not recommended during breast-feeding.
  • Interaction with some indigestion medicines: Indigestion remedies containing aluminium and magnesium may affect the action of ALLEREX by lowering the amount of medicinal product absorbed. It is recommended that you leave about 2 hours between the time that you take ALLEREX and your indigestion remedy.
  • Can be taken With or without food: ALLEREX may be taken with or without food. Take ALLEREX Tablets with a glass of water to make it easier to swallow.
  • 5 days: Take ALLEREX for up to 5 days, if necessary. If symptoms persist after 5 days, consult your Doctor.
  • FEXODINE is similar to ALLEREX

    What is ALLEREX?

    ALLEREX contains an active ingredient called fexofenadine hydrochloride. It is one of a group of medicines called antihistamines. Antihistamines help reduce allergic symptoms by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which your body produces when exposed to certain substances. 

    ALLEREX is a non-sedating antihistamine which means it has been shown not to cause drowsiness.

    What are the uses of ALLEREX?

    ALLEREX 60 mg tablet:  used to relieve the symptoms of hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) in adults and children aged 12 years or older. Symptoms of hayfever include runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery, red eyes. Hay Fever is usually caused by allergy to various types of pollen from grasses, weeds or trees.

    Dosage and administration

    For adults and children aged 12 years and over:

  • ALLEREX 60 mg tablets: For the relief of the symptoms of hayfever, the usual dosage for adults and children over 12 years old is one ALLEREX 60 mg tablet twice daily, as necessary. 
  • Follow the instructions written on the back of the box. 

  • If you take the wrong dose, ALLEREX may not work as well and your symptoms may not improve.
  • Take ALLEREX tablets with a glass of water to make it easier to swallow. ALLEREX may be taken with or without food.
  • Take ALLEREX for up to 5 days, if necessary. If symptoms persist after 5 days, consult your Doctor or Pharmacist. 
  • Do not try to make up for missed doses by taking more than one dose at a time. This may increase the chance of getting an unwanted side effect. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take the next dose when you are meant to. But if there is still a long time to go before your next dose, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as you would normally.

    What is the duration of treatment with ALLEREX?

    For how long can I continue taking ALLEREX? The duration of use depends on the case of the allergy.

  • For acute cases: it can be taken with the onset of symptoms and stopped when the symptoms have ended, and it can be reused if the symptoms return again. 
  • For chronic cases: it can be taken daily throughout the period of exposure to the allergen ( Sometimes treatment with ALLEREX can extend throughout the spring season).
  • Can ALLEREX Tablets be used by hypertensive patients?

    Yes, ALLEREX tablets can be used by hypertensive patients. ALLEREX will not affect blood pressure, but it may interact with some medicines that are used to lower blood pressure. 

    ALLEREX can be taken by patients with high blood pressure safely, but after making sure that it will not interact with other medicines that they are taking to lower their blood pressure. 

    As a general rule: If you have high blood pressure, consult your doctor before taking any allergy medication to make sure it is safe for you.

    Side effects

    All medicines can cause side effects. Sometimes they are serious, but most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects. Although most people will not experience any, some of the side effects that could occur with ALLEREX are: 

  • Headache.
  • Tiredness.
  • Nausea.
  • Dizziness.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): 

  • Tiredness.
  • Sleepiness.
  • Additional side effects (frequency not known: cannot be estimated from the available data) which may occur are:

  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia).
  • sleeping disorders.
  • bad dreams.
  • Nervousness.
  • fast or irregular heart beat.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • skin rash and itching.
  • Hives.
  • serious allergic reactions which can cause swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, flushing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. 
  • Reporting of side effects 

    If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

    Driving and using machines

    It is unlikely that fexofenadine hydrochloride tablets will produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines. However, some people are more sensitive and may have an unusual reaction to medicines, so care should be taken before driving or performing complicated tasks.

    Tips to help reduce your symptoms 

    There are a few things you can do that might help reduce your hay fever symptoms. The following tips may help prevent hayfever: 

  • during pollen seasons, on windy days or after thunderstorms keep doors and windows shut at home and in your car.
  • shower or bathe after activities where you may have been exposed to pollen.
  • during pollen seasons use the recirculated air setting in the car.
  • don’t hang clothes outside because pollen can stick to them, especially when it’s windy.
  • avoid mowing the lawn or wear a mask while doing it .
  • vacuum your house regularly. Pollen can remain on the carpet for up to three months.
  • Contraindications

  • Do not take ALLEREX tablets if you are:
  • pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, unless advised to do so by a Doctor or Pharmacist.
  • Do not take ALLEREX if you have an allergy to fexofenadine, terfenadine or any of the other  ingredients in ALLEREX. Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin rash, difficulty in breathing or faintness.
  • Do not give ALLEREX 60 mg tablets to children under 12 years of age.
  • Do not take ALLEREX after the expiry date (EXP) printed on the pack or if the packaging is damaged or shows signs of tampering. If you take it after the expiry date has passed, it may not work as well. 
  • Precautions

    You should inform your pharmacist or doctor if you have any allergies to any other medicines, foods, preservatives or dyes. Your pharmacist or doctor will consider these points when recommending ALLEREX. 

    Consult your Doctor or Pharmacist if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • blocked nose without any other symptoms. 
  • symptoms on only one side of your nose. 
  • thick, green or yellow discharge from your nose.
  • repeated nosebleeds.
  • loss of smell.
  • a drip down the back of your throat with thick mucus and/or runny nose.
  • taste disturbances or loss of taste .
  • ear pain or discomfort.
  • pain in your face.
  • Fever.
  • These symptoms are not usually found in hayfever. 

    If you are taking medicines to treat heartburn and indigestion that contain aluminium or magnesium hydroxide, wait 2 hours before taking ALLEREX.

    How to store ALLEREX?

  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. 
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
  • This medicine does not require any special storage condition. 
  • Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment. Ref: 1, 2, 3, 4.
